Hey everyone,
I have a new card to show you all, but first of all I just had to share with you (for those that didn’t know already!) that my last card made it to The Spotlight for Dawn McVey’s Challenge!! For those of you who have stopped by here before you’ll know that I’m just a *little bit* of a Dawn fan, hehe!! This news was a dream come true for me as I’ve really wanted to get chosen for so long, and I finally did it!!! I’m sure to be celebrating for some time to come!!

Right, now that I’m finished gushing (for now!) I’ll move onto today’s card! My mojo’s been a bit on the quiet side since I was ill and I just felt to blah to create, and even after I was all better I felt like my mojo was still under the weather! I’ve hopefully kicked it now with this card!! I wanted to try something a little different and leave a little more ‘white’ space than I usually do, plus use Ocean Tides which I almost never do!
What do you think?! I wanted to go for a bit of a different colour scheme so I opted for white, Berry Sorbet and Dark Chocolate to go with my Ocean Tides! I think it makes the card a bit fresher in contrast to the soothing Ocean Tides colour, which is what I was after!
I started with the Ocean Tides layer and punched the border using one of my newest Martha Stewart punches. I then stamped the stems from Blooming Button Bits. The stems stamp has only 3 stems so I then inked only one of the stems again and used it to stamp two more stems, making sure they were all at different heights for interest.
I cut circles of Berry Sorbet and Dark Chocolate cardstock using Nestabilities and then distressed the edges using my Heidi Swapp paper distresser. I’d been after a paper distresser for ages and once I saw this one was recommended by Dawn McVey I knew I should get it! Especially as it is pink, and cheaper than the Tim Holtz one!!
I chose some Berry Sorbet and Dark Chocolate buttons from my stash to use for the centres of the flowers. I wanted to use a variety of different ones for interest. One of my Berry Sorbet buttons had a lovely rhinestone in the centre, and I had a small Dark Chocolate button of a similar shape but no rhinestone, so I added a rhinestone from my stash to the centre of it. I think that turned out pretty well!
I wanted each flower to look different so some flowers had two layers of circles and some only one. I inked the distressed edges of the Berry Sorbet circles to help them stand out a bit more. I adhered the circles together with Scor-Tape so there was no dimension between them, and adhered the buttons with a very small amount of Pinflair Glue Gel so there was no dimension there either. I wanted all the dimension to come between the last layer and the Ocean Tides cardstock, so the flowers were finally adhered to the Ocean Tides layer using varying amounts of Pinflair.
I wanted to use my new Martha Stewart Butterfly punches as I’ve been wanting to get these for ages! I used the triple punch to punch out the butterflies from Rustic White cardstock, then bent the wings up slightly and adhered the butterflies with Pinflair. I love how they have a bit of height of the layer and seem to just be fluttering and resting on the card!
I wanted to use the sentiment to also double-up as the ‘ground’ for the flowers so I chose one from Blooming Button Bits that was of a reasonable length. I wanted the sentiment to stand out well so I stamped using Versamark and embossed with White Detail Embossing Powder, then adhered the Ocean Tides layer to a Stamper’s Select White card base using Scor-Tape. I’m more or less happy with how the embossing turned out except for a very few tiny specks that I just seemed to be unable to tap or brush off, grr! I think I’ll be buying the embossing powder that Papertrey carries next time to see if it’ll work any better!
So what do you think? I really like how this card turned out, a bit different than my usual cards but I’m enjoying experimenting with different styles and techniques at the moment, which you’ll see with one of the cards that I entered for January’s GSS when I finally post it on here! I also noticed after making this card that Nichole Heady did some similar flowers when she introduced Blooming Button Bits! I didn’t intentionally CASE that idea – just goes to show you can absorb all manner of inspiration and not always be aware of it!!
